Windows 7

Windows 7 is a satisfactory upgrade to Windows XP. It is much more demanding on hardware.

Some third-party software we have tested does not work with Windows 7. Moreover, drivers for many legacy devices are missing and may never be provided. Windows 7 requires at least 2 GB of memory and much more is advisable. The 32-bit version can only support 3GB addressable memory so the 64-bit version is preferred for all new installations, and it is here that driver support is weakest.

Windows 7 offers a solution using a virtual Windows XP installation to support applications incompatible with Windows 7, but this only works on supported (that is, new) hardware.

Mixing Windows 7 (or Vista) and Windows XP on a Windows domain is not a good idea.

Windows XP SP3 patched up to date is still a very adequate solution for Business Windows desktops. We will be supporting the use of Windows 7 in due course.
