Windows Vista

We recommend that our clients do NOT install or specify Windows Vista 32 bit. Our evaluation has shown it to be resource-hungry, slow and unreliable even on new machines. SP1 has not helped. The DRM is causing significantly degraded audio and video performance.

The majority of the third-party software we have tested works unreliably with Vista installed. Moreover, drivers for most legacy devices are missing and may never be provided. The OS uses so much memory that little of the 3GB addressable is left for applications.

Currently, Vista offers no signifcant benefits for Business Users protected by network firewalls and with working anti-virus and only 4% or Corporates are using it (see Corporate IT Forum). It will however cause significant extra costs to be incurred.

The best solution for Business Windows desktops is still Windows XP SP3 patched up to date, though we are already encountering difficulty sourcing this.
